My Background

After a career in global IT Infrastructure, I pivoted back to my artistic roots. I set up JMo Studio to pursue paper cutting as my primary art form, while also evolving my watercolour and oil painting practice. The precision of cutting paper with a blade, the complexity of negative spaces, and working out the details of an image across multiple dimensions of paper layers aligns with my engineer’s spirit. My heart sings when a beautiful image emerges beneath my knife.

In addition to art, I still stay connected to the IT world through my digital studio, blending art with web design. I've helped small businesses re-design their websites and re-brand their products and services to showcase their unique and compelling stories.

Paper Cutting

Paper cut art has a rich tradition around the world, dating back to the invention of paper in 4th century China. Paper moves like fabric. It bends and stretches; its fibres fray and fuzz. It has a thickness that reacts to different blade angles.  Images develop from either positive or negative space, and have a graphic quality because of the limited colour palette.

My particular method involves layering contiguous pieces of cut paper rather than glueing small shapes together. I begin with a sketch, usually from a reference photo. I often work through the layers digitally based on final paper size to simplify the image down to appropriate detail level and limited cohesive colours. I select paper from sample books in the studio to align with image size, colour, texture, weight and overall composition goals. Paper is supplied from a known local source to ensure uniform cutting response and minimal fading. I cut each layer by hand using knife and scalpel blade. Completed layers are then stacked to form the final image for traditional frame, floating frame, shadowbox or light box.

I am based in London, UK, but travel regularly around the world. I work with clients globally and we can easily meet via video conferencing at a time that works for us both.
